Avalanche Outpaces Ethereum with Faster Transactions and New Architecture
Avalanche is an alternative blockchain platform to Ethereum that offers faster transaction processing times and a different architecture. It uses a family of consensus protocols called Snow, with Snowman being the linear-chain version used on the C-Chain and P-Chain.
Avalanche's base layer, the Primary Network, separates three jobs onto three chains: the C-Chain for smart contracts, the X-Chain for asset issuance and transfers, and the P-Chain for coordinating validators and independent chains. The C-Chain uses Snowman consensus, which is probabilistic and leaderless.
Avalanche's architecture differs from Ethereum's in several ways. While Ethereum secures one execution environment that every application shares and competes for, Avalanche splits the work across three coordinated chains. This allows projects to launch fully independent chains beyond the Primary Network.
The tradeoff between Avalanche and Ethereum is speed versus decentralization. Avalanche gives up Ethereum's proven decentralization track record and its slashing-based validator security in exchange for faster transaction processing times. However, this also means that validators on Avalanche do not face a direct financial penalty for misbehavior.
