Avalanche Users Warned: Choosing the Wrong Chain Can Cost Your Funds
Avalanche, a popular blockchain platform, consists of three chains that run in parallel: C-Chain, X-Chain, and P-Chain. The C-Chain is where tokens, smart contracts, and DeFi live, making it the most relevant for users.
The distinction between the chains is simple: C-Chain addresses begin with '0x', while X-Chain addresses start with 'X-avax' and P-Chain addresses with 'P-avax'. To avoid confusion, users should identify their wallet's address to ensure it matches the correct chain. For instance, if an exchange offers both options for AVAX withdrawals, selecting the wrong network can result in the balance being sent to an unreachable address.
The Core wallet developed by Ava Labs is a convenient option for managing funds across all three chains. MetaMask and other EVM wallets also support the C-Chain, but users need to set it up manually with specific details from the official documentation. It's essential to note that browser wallet extensions are connected to the internet and should not be used to store long-term balances.
The network fee on the C-Chain is minimal, with a base price of 1 wei (the smallest fraction) per gas unit since the Octane upgrade in April 2025. This means that even simple transfers cost only around 0.000105 AVAX, which is approximately one-tenth of a cent at current prices.
