Avalanche's Helicon Upgrade: What You Need to Know
Avalanche is set to upgrade its network on September 22, 2026, with the Helicon hard fork. This change will affect validators and delegators alike. One of the key changes is that the minimum lock-up for validators will fall from two weeks to just 48 hours.
This change may seem beneficial at first glance, but it also introduces new risks for delegators. With the shorter lock-up period, delegators must ensure that their chosen validator meets the new uptime threshold of 90 percent. Any validator that falls below this threshold will not receive rewards, and the staked amount itself will be untouched.
A snapshot taken on September 17, 2026, revealed that 37 out of 593 validators would fail to meet the new threshold. This means that delegators must carefully choose their validators to avoid missing out on rewards.
