AWS to Discontinue Amazon Managed Blockchain by 2027
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced that it will end support for its Amazon Managed Blockchain (AMB) service on September 29, 2027. The service, which assists with blockchain network operations and data retrieval, will stop accepting new customers starting October 29, 2023. Existing customers can continue using AMB until the support termination date but will lose access to its functionalities afterward. AWS is advising current users to begin migration plans as soon as possible.
Launched in 2018, AMB was designed to simplify the creation and management of blockchain networks for businesses and developers. Initially supporting Hyperledger Fabric, a permissioned blockchain framework, AWS later expanded AMB to include Ethereum in 2021. In 2023, the service added AMB Access and AMB Query, enabling connections to public blockchains like Ethereum, Bitcoin, and Polygon, and facilitating data retrieval from multiple blockchains.
For customers using AMB Access to connect with Ethereum, Bitcoin, and Polygon, AWS recommends migrating to self-managed blockchain nodes on AWS or third-party providers such as Alchemy, QuickNode, or Kaleido. The AWS Blockchain Node Runners tool is available for those opting to manage their own nodes. Meanwhile, AMB Query users are directed toward managed blockchain data providers like QuickNode and Allium. For Hyperledger Fabric users, AWS suggests transitioning to alternative managed services, self-managed networks, or AWS databases, though the latter option will forfeit blockchain-specific functionalities.
AWS has not disclosed the specific reasons behind the decision to end AMB support, stating only that the conclusion was reached after careful consideration.
