Aztec Labs Revives zk.money, a Private Ethereum Wallet for Secure Transactions
Aztec Labs has relaunched zk.money, a private Ethereum wallet that allows users to make transactions without revealing their financial history. The wallet is built on the Aztec Network and offers self-custody of funds, with no privileged administrator role.
The original zk.money was launched in 2021 and reached over 75,000 unique wallets, with $100 million in transaction volume. However, it was retired in 2023 while the company worked on the infrastructure for a general-purpose private network.
The new wallet uses Ethereum Name Service technology to replace long addresses with user-friendly tags such as 'bob.zk.money', allowing users to send or request funds by sharing a link. Users can also access the wallet through the zk.money website or a frontend run on their own device, with a mobile app planned for release.
Aztec Labs CEO Joe Andrews said, 'Onchain transactions between two individuals shouldn't mean publishing your financial history to the world.' The company emphasizes that users retain control of their financial history and can make payments without exposing their balance or transaction history on the public ledger.
