Adam Back, a prominent figure in the development of Bitcoin (BTC), has disputed recent claims that developer Peter Todd is Satoshi Nakamoto. According to Back, the concept of Bitcoin dates back to 1997 and can be traced to cypherpunk research on private lists.

In an email thread, Back pointed out that decentralized money built on proof-of-work circulated before any whitepaper was published. He also highlighted his own Hashcash system, written in 1997 to combat email spam, which later anchored Bitcoin's mining and was cited by Satoshi Nakamoto in the original paper.

Back emphasized that solving the double-spending problem and fusing various ideas into a working system was Nakamoto's real feat. He likened the protocol's design space to the Pythagorean theorem or DNA, noting that tweaks could cause it to fail.
