Backpack Launches Tokenized Brazil ETF on Solana Amid Election Rally
Backpack Securities has introduced a tokenized version of the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF ($EWZ) on the Solana blockchain through its partner Sunrise. This move brings a major Brazilian equities trading vehicle into the crypto space, timed with a significant market rally following Brazil’s first-round presidential election.
The tokenized EWZ is redeemable 1:1 for traditional shares of the ETF via Backpack Securities. The launch coincides with a 13% jump in EWZ’s value on Monday, driven by unexpected election results. Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro secured about 47% of the vote, narrowly ahead of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at 45%, setting the stage for a runoff on October 25.
Brazilian markets reacted strongly to the election outcome, with the Bovespa index surging over 8% and the Brazilian real strengthening by more than 4%. Investors anticipate a more market-friendly fiscal agenda under Bolsonaro’s potential leadership. The tokenized ETF offers a new way for investors to gain exposure to Brazilian equities, particularly during heightened market activity.
Backpack Securities, launched earlier this year with Sunrise as its tokenization partner, aims to bridge traditional and crypto markets. The company allows conversion of traditional securities into Solana-based tokens, which can later be redeemed back into corresponding security entitlements. This development highlights the growing trend of tokenized assets, with the market capitalization of tokenized equities expanding rapidly.
