Backpack Tokenizes Brazil ETF on Solana Amid Market Rally
Backpack Securities has introduced a tokenized version of the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF ($EWZ) on the Solana blockchain through its partner Sunrise. This move brings a major Brazilian equity trading vehicle onto crypto platforms, coinciding with a sharp market reaction to Brazil’s first-round presidential election results.
The tokenized $EWZ is redeemable 1:1 for traditional shares of the ETF through Backpack Securities and can be transferred to traditional brokerages. The launch follows a 13% surge in EWZ on Monday, driven by Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro’s unexpected first-place finish in the election, ahead of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. This outcome has set the stage for a runoff on October 25.
Brazilian markets reacted strongly to the election results, with the Bovespa index rising over 8% and the real strengthening by more than 4%. Investors anticipate a more market-friendly fiscal agenda. The timing highlights the advantage of tokenized assets, allowing investors to gain exposure to specific markets during high-demand events without relying on traditional brokerage hours.
Backpack Securities, launched earlier this year with Sunrise as its tokenization partner, converts traditional securities into Solana-based tokens. The market for tokenized equities has seen rapid growth, with DefiLlama reporting a ninefold increase in market capitalization over the past year to more than $3.7 billion. Currently, around $2.7 billion in onchain public equities are tracked, with approximately $196 million actively deployed across decentralized finance (DeFi).
