Back's Business Empire Faces Challenges Amid Sidechain Theft, SPAC Collapse
Adam Back's business ventures have been making headlines lately due to several challenges. The most significant issue is the theft of around $320 million from a Blockstream-built sidechain called Liquid Network. In this case, an attacker exploited a bug in the Elements software to mint unbacked LBTC tokens and drain Bitcoin reserves. While 3,400 BTC have been returned, around 602 BTC are still missing.
The second issue is related to BSTR Holdings, a public listing for a bitcoin treasury company led by Back. The deal collapsed, triggering a $15 million termination fee, with $10 million due on September 19 and $5 million due on December 1. It's worth noting that this is not a Liquid hack, but rather a separate issue related to the BSTR SPAC.
Lastly, several mining-related court cases are ongoing in US courts. Blockstream Corporation has been awarded around $5.88 million, while Thigmotropism received $19.23 million, and Back was awarded $715,081. River Financial is seeking around $6.7 million in refunds for prepaid mining hosting services.
