BaFin rejects futurum bank AG's MiCAR application
Bitcoin Group SE has announced that the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) has rejected the MiCAR authorisation application submitted by its subsidiary, futurum bank AG. The application, filed on 27 June 2025, sought approval as a crypto-asset service provider under the EU's MiCAR regulation. According to the company, BaFin has made it clear that its previous tolerance of crypto-asset services by futurum bank AG is no longer applicable.
The refusal poses significant challenges for the future of the Bitcoin.de platform, which is operated by futurum bank AG. The company had already anticipated this outcome due to the prolonged authorisation process, which has lasted over 15 months. As a result, operational trading activities have been suspended since 12 June 2026. Futurum bank AG plans to collaborate with a regulated German institution to resume trading through an updated Bitcoin.de app, with the new partner acting as the trading counterparty and another regulated entity serving as custodian.
Bitcoin Group SE and futurum bank AG are currently reviewing BaFin's decision, which can be appealed within one month of notification. The company also retains the option to reapply for authorisation in the future. Futurum bank AG will continue to securely hold customer assets until they are transferred to the alternative regulated custodian, ensuring that all customer claims remain intact. Further details will be provided to customers via the Bitcoin.de website.
