Banks Launch Dollar Stablecoin Initiative for Cross-Border Payments
A group of 21 global banks is planning to launch a US dollar stablecoin in the first half of 2027. The initiative aims to leverage established banking relationships to facilitate early institutional adoption, especially for cross-border payments.
The consortium includes Bank of America and Goldman Sachs, two prominent financial institutions. However, experts caution that success depends on several factors, including liquidity, interoperability, wallet support, and ease of redemption. The stablecoin's backing is not enough to ensure its success.
The new bank-backed stablecoin could expand the overall market and compete with existing players like USDT and USDC by integrating with corporate workflows and offering regulated redemption. However, widespread adoption will hinge on practical utility and seamless cross-network use.
