Banks Pushed Strategy To Show Willingness To Sell Bitcoin Holdings
Strategy's CEO Phong Le said banks were hesitant to consider the company's Bitcoin holdings as collateral because they wanted to see that Strategy was willing to sell them if needed. This led the company to change its approach and introduce a digital credit capital framework.
The framework includes holding more cash, buying back preferred securities, and selling Bitcoin if necessary to support common stock and preferred shares. Le said that banks view Strategy's Bitcoin holdings like any other collateral, where they want to see liquidity and the willingness to sell.
Strategy holds about 845,050 BTC as of September 7, despite selling 7,000 Bitcoin this year but buying about 170,000 on a net basis, increasing its total holdings by 25%. Le stated that Strategy's 'never sell' stance was not an official company policy and that the firm would sell Bitcoin if needed to protect the business.
Le also pushed back against the idea that investors must thoroughly understand Bitcoin before holding it, calling this view 'elitist.' He said that owning an asset doesn't require understanding every single thing about how it works.
