Base Network Activates Cobalt Upgrade with Conditional Swap Execution and B20 Token Enhancements
Base Network has activated its Cobalt upgrade, marking the third significant enhancement to its Ethereum layer-2 platform. This upgrade introduces Validity Transactions, which enable conditional swap execution based on predefined criteria, allowing users to queue transactions that remain dormant until specific blockchain conditions materialize. The upgrade also expands functionality within the B20 token framework, initially introduced last June, with the addition of Composite Policies and Schedule Multiplier Updates. These features empower issuers to merge multiple allowlists and blocklists through Boolean logic operations and program display balance modifications, such as those occurring during equity splits. The seizeWithMemo function enables transparent token seizure from frozen wallets with documented justification.
The Base Network's development roadmap extends beyond Cobalt, with plans to compress block times from the current two-second interval to just 200 milliseconds within upcoming months. Additional implementations include native smart account integration, gas fee sponsorship mechanisms, and transaction bundling capabilities, some of which will incorporate elements from Ethereum's forthcoming Glamsterdam upgrade.
Base's strategic pivot towards financial utilities, including trading mechanisms and payment systems, has yielded tangible results, with Coinbase introducing tokenized equity products on Base utilizing B20 standards, featuring shares from major corporations including Apple and Nvidia.
