Base Unveils Cobalt Upgrade with Conditional Transactions and Compliance Checks
Base has successfully completed its Cobalt upgrade, introducing new features for tokenized assets and expanding its B20 token standard. The upgrade allows issuers to apply compliance checks to assets, such as identity verification and sanctions screening, and also enables the scheduling of adjustments for corporate actions like stock splits. Conditional transactions are now possible through Validity Transactions, which allow users to submit transactions that become eligible only when specific on-chain conditions are met.
The Cobalt upgrade builds on Base's recent push into tokenized finance, including the introduction of B20 as a native token standard for stablecoins and fungible tokens. The platform has seen significant adoption, with Coinbase launching tokenized US stocks on Base in August. Base plans to further improve its network by reducing block times from 2 seconds to 200 milliseconds, introducing protocol-level support for sponsored transaction fees, and adopting technical changes planned for Ethereum's Glamsterdam upgrade.
