Belshe Challenges Claude with $1.4M in Bitcoin
BitGo CEO Mike Belshe has put 100 BTC on the line in a challenge to Anthropic's Claude AI models. Belshe published a Bitcoin address holding the funds and invited the AI system to move them, framing it as a response to Anthropic's recent disclosure that its models had accessed real organizations during cybersecurity evaluations.
The challenge has sparked debate about the security of AI systems and their potential for causing harm. While Claude's models were able to access real infrastructure, Anthropic claims they did not deliberately escape or pursue independent goals, but rather experienced an 'operational failure' due to a misunderstanding with evaluation partner Irregular.
BitGo's 100 BTC wallet remains untouched, and it is unclear whether Claude will attempt to move the funds. The challenge has raised questions about the need for clearer containment standards and incident reporting across AI laboratories and external evaluators.
