Beyer Blocks Crypto Tax Bill Over Corruption Fears

US Representative Don Beyer (D-Va.) voted against the Digital Asset Tax Certainty Act, citing concerns over corruption, fraud, and President Donald Trump's ties to digital assets.

The legislation, which was approved by the House Ways and Means Committee with a bipartisan 38-5 vote, would overhaul the federal tax treatment of digital assets. Beyer acknowledged that the bill had improved substantially during negotiations, but expressed reservations about further integrating cryptocurrency into the nation's financial system.

Beyer argued that cryptocurrencies have become associated with fraud, illicit finance, and political corruption, and criticized Trump's involvement in crypto ventures, including World Liberty Financial and a Trump-branded meme coin. He alleged that these ventures created conflicts between the president's public responsibilities and private financial interests, calling it 'a perversion of our democratic system.'

The Digital Asset Tax Certainty Act would provide clearer tax rules for cryptocurrency users and businesses, but Beyer believes this should not be a priority until concerns over corruption and regulation are addressed.
