Binance Accused of Breaching Client Privacy Amid Russian Cooperation

Binance, one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges, has been caught sharing client information with Russian authorities. The move is raising questions about data protection protocols and whether Binance has compromised user privacy.

The incident involves Yuri Belenkiy, an IT specialist accused by Moscow of financing terrorism through cryptocurrency donations to groups classified as terrorist organizations. According to reports, Binance provided Russian law enforcement with transaction details tied to Belenkiy's account, which helped build the case against him.

This disclosure is notable because Binance had previously exited the Russian market in response to what it called 'operational complexities' that conflicted with its compliance strategy. Despite this, the exchange still shared user data with authorities, potentially violating EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
