Binance boosts cybersecurity awareness as African crypto adoption surges
As cryptocurrency adoption surges across Africa, the need for robust cybersecurity measures is becoming increasingly critical. Binance, a leading global cryptocurrency exchange, is leveraging Cybersecurity Awareness Month to promote basic security practices among African users. The company emphasizes compliance, law-enforcement cooperation, and financial education as key components in safeguarding digital asset users from scams, fraud, and cybercrime.
The push for enhanced security measures comes as African markets move toward more formal oversight of virtual assets. Kenya passed its Virtual Asset Service Providers Act in 2025 and is developing regulations for licensing and supervision. Ghana has introduced a legal framework for virtual asset service providers, while South Africa is expanding its regulatory approach, including proposed rules for cross-border transactions. These regulatory shifts reflect growing concerns about risks beyond price volatility, such as phishing, fake investment schemes, and social-engineering attacks.
Binance reports investing approximately $300 million annually in compliance and employs nearly 1,500 people in compliance-related roles. The company's systems intercepted around $10.53 billion in potential fraud, scams, and unusual activity between 2025 and the first quarter of 2026. Binance also processed over 71,000 law-enforcement requests and supported authorities in recovering or seizing more than $130 million in illicit funds. These figures highlight the critical role of compliance infrastructure in the development of digital-asset markets.
Education is a key part of Binance's security strategy. The company has provided free crypto education to over 400,000 people across Africa through its Masterclass programme. Binance Academy offers free educational materials on topics like phishing and fraudulent websites. Samukele Mkhize, Compliance Head for Binance Africa, emphasized that security and trust are essential for the continued growth of crypto use on the continent. Users are encouraged to adopt measures like two-factor authentication, anti-phishing codes, and withdrawal address whitelists to enhance their security.
