Binance Brushes Off Lagarde Speculation Amid European MiCA Commitment
Binance has denied speculation that European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde intervened in its failed bid for a Greek crypto license. The company reaffirmed its commitment to operating under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) in Europe.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Lagarde had asked Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis not to approve Binance's application, citing an unnamed vice chair of Greece's Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC). However, the report also stated that Greek officials informed the European Securities and Markets Authority in early June that the regulator intended to approve the license.
Binance declined to comment on the speculation, stating 'We will not comment on speculation.' The company has been seeking a MiCA license in Greece since January but withdrew its application just days ahead of the July 1 deadline. It is now reportedly seeking authorization in another EU jurisdiction.
