Binance Coin (BNB) Evolution: From Simple Token to Complex Cryptocurrency
Binance Coin (BNB) has evolved significantly since its launch in July 2017 through an Initial Coin Offering that raised $15 million. Initially, it was a simple fee-discount token for Binance exchange users.
However, the network behind BNB Chain has grown to encompass more complex use cases, including staking rewards, payments, and even early access to new token sales through Binance Launchpad.
The BNB Chain runs on a proof-of-stake authority setup, where around 40-45 validators stake BNB to process transactions and receive network fees. This approach keeps the chain fast and cheap but leans more centralized than larger networks like Ethereum.
Binance Coin (BNB) also functions as gas on the BNB Smart Chain, with every transaction or smart contract call requiring a small amount of BNB. The token's supply is periodically reduced through quarterly coin burns, which aims to support scarcity and long-term value.
