Binance CZ Warns of Hidden Security Risks in Smaller Exchange Acquisitions
Changpeng Zhao, founder and former CEO of Binance, has sounded a warning to the cryptocurrency exchange industry about the dangers of acquiring smaller exchanges.
CZ argued that when a larger platform acquires a smaller one, it not only inherits users and order books but also legacy vulnerabilities, outdated code, potentially compromised infrastructure, and security practices that may have been cobbled together by a skeleton crew.
This is particularly relevant given CZ's own experience with Binance, which he founded in 2017 and rapidly grew into the world's largest exchange by trading volume. He stepped down as CEO in 2023 amid regulatory pressures.
CZ emphasized that acquiring a smaller exchange without addressing its security issues can be more costly than building from scratch. This is because security measures are often baked into architecture decisions made years earlier, making it difficult to remediate existing vulnerabilities.
