Binance Flash Crash Highlights Liquidity Concerns
Veteran trader Peter Brandt criticized Binance after a sudden Bitcoin price drop on August 22 caused a flash crash exclusive to Binance. The price plummeted to $72,500, while other exchanges like Coinbase showed stable prices around $79,000.
This anomaly wiped out retail traders' stop-loss orders and margin collateral due to insufficient liquidity and Binance's reliance on local last price for protective orders.
Brandt highlighted Binance's history of similar incidents and warned that using a market-wide weighted price would better protect traders from such isolated price wicks.
