The world's largest crypto exchange, Binance, suffered a devastating hack last Thursday, resulting in the theft of roughly $6 billion in just 20 minutes. This unprecedented heist, attributed to North Korea's hacking group TraderTraitor by the FBI, marks the largest theft of any kind in history. Investigations revealed that the hackers exploited compromised engineer laptops and additional breach points, triggering Binance to halt transactions and activate an internal war room to mitigate the damage.

As of this recording, Binance has covered approximately 95 percent of the stolen funds using its cash reserves, including its SAFU fund, which was initially only a billion dollars. The hack underscores the sophistication of North Korean cyber operations, which have become a significant part of the country's economy. South Korea's central bank estimates North Korea's 2025 GDP at $26 billion, making this hack a substantial portion of their economic activity.

The laundering of the stolen funds has been notably swift and extensive, with hackers using newly created wallets and systems like Tornado Cash. The FBI and other agencies are still investigating the tools used, but reports suggest automation and AI coding tools like Cursor may have played a role. This incident highlights the maturity of the crypto industry in handling such massive breaches without collapsing, though it also raises concerns about the industry's vulnerability to state-sponsored cybercrime.
