Binance Pay Brings USDT to Millions of Japanese Merchants
Binance Pay has expanded its services in Japan by allowing eligible overseas users to spend Tether's USDT at millions of PayPay-supported merchants starting this Wednesday. The service uses HIVEX, a payment interoperability framework that connects overseas QR payment services to Japanese merchants.
According to Binance, this is the first time a crypto payment service has accessed PayPay-supported merchants through HIVEX. This means merchants do not need to opt-in separately for USDT transactions. PayPay is a widely accepted cashless payment service in Japan, covering major chains, smaller retailers, vending machines, taxis, and public transportation.
Japan welcomed a record 42.7 million international visitors last year, making it the ninth most visited country worldwide and the top destination in Asia in terms of tourism arrivals. This expansion by Binance Pay may cater to the growing number of international travelers visiting Japan, who can now use their USDT for daily expenses.
