Binance is currently investigating a significant security breach that led to unauthorized withdrawals, with an estimated financial impact of $6.3 billion. The initial findings suggest that the attacker gained access through a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer, enabling unauthorized transactions. Additional points of breach were also discovered, though their exact nature remains unconfirmed.
The cryptocurrency exchange has temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals as a precautionary measure while security checks are underway. Binance is working closely with law enforcement to identify and bring the responsible parties to justice. The company has assured users that all losses will be covered by the SAFU fund and the company’s funds, and that user funds remain safe.
Binance plans to publish a detailed technical post-mortem once the investigation is complete and the facts have been verified. The exchange has also frozen approximately $3 billion in affected assets on-chain in coordination with blockchain partners. An updated Proof of Reserves will be released once the remediation process is finished.
“Our teams are working around the clock to resolve this issue safely and thoroughly,” Binance stated, emphasizing their commitment to resolving the incident in collaboration with law enforcement partners.
