Binance SAFU Fund Swells to Over $1.27 Billion in Bitcoin
Binance's Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) has grown significantly since its initial setup in July 2018. The fund, which is funded by 10% of trading fees, was created to cover customer losses in case of a security breach or other adverse events.
In mid-February 2026, Binance made a strategic move by converting approximately $1 billion worth of stablecoins into 15,000 BTC. At the time, Bitcoin's price was around $67,000. The conversion concluded on February 12 with a final large purchase of 4,545 BTC.
The fund's value has increased substantially since then. By early May 2026, Bitcoin had surpassed $81,000, and the fund's worth exceeded $1.2 billion, resulting in unrealized gains of approximately $217 million. The fund's holdings now stand at over $1.27 billion, with a paper profit of about $270 million.
Binance has made the SAFU wallet public, allowing anyone to track its balance on-chain. To ensure transparency and accountability, Binance will run regular audits of the fund and maintain a top-up rule: if the fund's market value falls below $800 million, it will be restored to $1 billion.
