Binance Sinks $100M into Circle, Ties Financial Interests Together
Binance has made a significant investment in Circle by purchasing $100 million worth of its Class A common stock. The purchase was made through a private placement, with Binance acquiring 1.237 million shares at a price of $80.84 per share. This deal marks the largest equity stake held by an exchange in a stablecoin issuer.
The acquisition is part of a larger five-year commercial agreement between Binance and Circle that aims to expand the adoption of USDC (USD Coin) across Binance's platform. Under this agreement, Circle will pay Binance a monthly fee calculated as a percentage of USDC held through its Modular Smart Contract Wallet infrastructure service.
The deal gives both companies a strong incentive to promote USDC and increase its usage on the platform. For Binance, the economics of the partnership extend beyond platform fees, with the exchange standing to benefit from both USDC balances and its ownership position in Circle. The transaction highlights how stablecoin competition is increasingly being shaped by distribution deals, platform integration, and ownership stakes rather than token economics alone.
