Binance Strengthens Cybersecurity Efforts to Protect African Crypto Users
Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, is marking Cybersecurity Awareness Month by urging African crypto users to adopt simple security measures to protect themselves from online scams and cyber threats. The company emphasizes that safeguarding users is a continuous effort, supported by strong compliance measures, partnerships with law enforcement, and free educational resources.
Across Africa, cryptocurrency has become integral to daily financial activities, from remittances to business transactions. However, as more people embrace digital assets, scammers are devising new tactics to exploit them. Common scams include fake websites, impersonation fraud, and unrealistic investment offers. Binance invests around $300 million annually in compliance, employing nearly 1,500 staff in compliance-related roles. Artificial intelligence enhances their ability to detect and mitigate emerging threats, with systems intercepting approximately $10.53 billion in potential fraud between 2025 and early 2026.
Binance collaborates globally with law enforcement, handling over 71,000 requests and aiding in the recovery or seizure of more than $130 million in illicit funds. The company also conducts training workshops for investigators and runs campaigns like "Know Your Scam" to educate users on identifying and avoiding fraudulent schemes. Free educational programs, such as the Binance Masterclass and Binance Academy, have reached over 400,000 people in Africa, teaching them how to recognize phishing, fake websites, and other common scams.
Samukele Mkhize, Compliance Head for Binance Africa, stresses that education is key to combating cybercrime. He advises users to enable two-factor authentication (2FA), set up an Anti-Phishing Code, use Binance Verify to check the authenticity of communications, and report any suspicious activity. "Security is what earns trust and trust is what allows crypto to keep growing in Africa," Mkhize said, emphasizing the importance of building user confidence through robust security measures.
