Binance's Greek MiCA License Bid Derailed Amid Lagarde Concerns

Binance's bid for a Greek MiCA license was derailed after ECB President Christine Lagarde reportedly urged Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to reject the application.

The application, which would have provided regulatory clearance for Binance to operate across the EU, had been pending since May. However, in June, Binance withdrew its bid before a formal decision was made by the Hellenic Capital Market Commission.

Lagarde's reported involvement in blocking the license was likely due to concerns over Binance's compliance history and the use of dollar-denominated stablecoins in Europe, which could potentially impact the ECB's digital-euro project.

Binance had been preparing for a formal announcement on its approval when it withdrew its application. The setback leaves the exchange without EU-wide authorization by the July 1, 2026, deadline.
