BIS Confirms Use of XRP Ledger in Data Integrity Pilot
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has confirmed its use of the XRP Ledger as blockchain infrastructure in a data integrity pilot. A new working paper from the BIS' Monetary and Economic Department, titled 'Verifiable Official Statistics: A Blockchain-Based Approach,' was published in September 2026.
The report details how the BIS chose XRPL due to its low fees, fast consensus finality, and available developer resources. The system anchors official statistical datasets to a public blockchain through cryptographic hashing, allowing users to verify that data has not been altered since its original release.
Each dataset receives a tamper-evident commitment on-chain, with reported transaction fees of approximately $0.000003 per anchoring event. Verifying individual datasets takes 1-2 seconds under test conditions, while publication latency runs between 3-5 seconds.
The BIS' decision to build and publish an XRPL-based system is a significant sign of XRP's credibility, particularly given the institution's central role in global central banking infrastructure. The report identifies multiple future use cases built on this foundation, including real-time data verification for AI agents and automated compliance tools for regulatory reporting.
