Bitcoin $79K Surge: Bull Run or Just a Blip?

Bitcoin's recent surge to $79,000 has sparked debate over whether it marks the start of a bull run. Experts weigh in on the factors driving the price increase.

A combination of improving fund flows, oversold conditions, and forced liquidations contributed to Bitcoin's rally, according to Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy Digital. The asset saw $1.9 billion in weekly net inflows into spot ETFs, its strongest showing since October 2025, with total crypto product inflows exceeding $2.6 billion.

Thorn noted that traders had accumulated large short exposure near Bitcoin's 52-week lows while volatility was historically depressed, creating 'dry kindling' for a sharp move once a catalyst emerged. The Treasury's plans to expand purchases of longer-dated government debt may have provided the spark.

However, Bloomberg's Mike McGlone remains bearish, viewing Bitcoin near $78,000 as a selling opportunity due to its high correlation with risk assets and vulnerability to rising stock-market volatility.
