Bitcoin Anti-Spam Fork Crashes After Just Two Blocks
A Bitcoin fork designed to combat blockchain spam has come to an end after producing just two blocks. The dissident chain was abandoned by virtually every miner on the network, unable to survive without sufficient hashrate.
The fork captured only 2.53% of the main network's total mining power at launch, immediately condemning it to a slow death. With such a marginal hashrate, block intervals stretched to several hours, making the chain practically unusable.
The difficulty mechanism, designed to stabilize Bitcoin, effectively turned against the fork: without a critical mass of miners, the chain became trapped in a vicious cycle where sluggish block times discouraged new participants, the very participants who could have accelerated block production.
This failure reinforces the case for Bitcoin's robustness. The protocol held firm without any modification, intervention from core developers, or centralized decision. Miners had a clear financial incentive to stay on the main chain: that is where liquidity, exchanges, users, and therefore the value of BTC block rewards are concentrated.
