Youth Shift to SMSFs: Cryptocurrency Fueled by Housing Affordability Concerns

Share

For younger Australians, the traditional understanding of investing for retirement is fraying. Rather than relying on professional fund managers and conventional superannuation funds, many are turning to self-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs) to gain exposure to cryptocurrency and other digital assets.

This shift is happening against a backdrop of worsening housing affordability, subdued wage growth, and growing skepticism about traditional pathways to wealth. The movement has sparked a broader debate about the role of licensed financial advisers in helping younger Australians make informed investment decisions.

Recent research from the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) suggests that younger people are increasingly turning to social media for retirement information, even though it is the least trusted source across every age group. Only half of Australian adults have sought any retirement information at all.

According to ASFA chief executive Mary Delahunty, the problem is not a lack of trust in sources, but rather accessibility. 'Australians know which sources of retirement information they can rely on,' she says. 'The problem is that the sources they trust most are often the hardest for them to reach.'

The barriers to accessing quality advice are structural, Delahunty argues. The cost of consulting an adviser outside of super and limitations on the scope of advice provided by super fund advisers are major obstacles.

Industry participants say that the demographic profile for SMSFs is changing rapidly. Around half of new super trustees are now under the age of 45, reflecting growing demand from younger Australians seeking greater control over their retirement savings and investment choices.
