Bitcoin Approaches $88,000 Short Seller Cluster Sparking Short Squeeze Speculation
Bitcoin (BTC) is nearing its September high, with short sellers accumulating leveraged positions just above the current price. As of October 5, 2026, Bitcoin is trading at $86,093, up 1% in the last 24 hours and 4% over the past week. This price is about 1.5% below the eight-month high of $87,397 reached on September 21.
Liquidation maps show a significant cluster of short positions around $88,000, roughly 2% above the current market price, and an even larger cluster near $90,000. If Bitcoin breaks through the $88,000 barrier, it could trigger a short squeeze, where forced buying from liquidated short positions drives the price higher.
A short squeeze occurs when short sellers are forced to buy back Bitcoin to cover their positions, creating a chain reaction of liquidations and additional buying. This phenomenon was observed on September 21, when Bitcoin surged from $80,837 to $87,397, liquidating around $750 million in short positions. However, the rally faded quickly, with Bitcoin dropping below $85,000 by September 25.
Despite a recent 8% monthly gain, Bitcoin remains 30% down over the last year and 32% below its all-time high of $126,080, reached in October 2025. The size of the $88,000 cluster will determine how far a potential short squeeze could propel Bitcoin. While a short squeeze could drive the price higher, sustained buying from actual investors is necessary to maintain momentum after liquidations cease.
