Bitcoin battles $85,000 resistance in key market test
Bitcoin has been repeatedly testing the $85,000 resistance level, with analysts viewing it as a critical threshold for determining the next major market move. This price point has become a significant point of friction, with some framing it as the key to a potential structural shift in Bitcoin's trading pattern. A Forbes report highlighted one analyst's view that breaking through this level could signal a meaningful change in market dynamics.
The $85,000 mark is notable for hosting a large sell wall, a cluster of limit sell orders that must be absorbed before the price can rise further. Analysts at Glassnode observed a substantial sell wall on Binance, which tripled in size after September 24, 2026. Partial clearance of this wall around October 2 allowed Bitcoin to briefly reach approximately $87,000, its highest level since late September. As of October 6, Bitcoin was trading between $85,000 and $86,000, with its range for September and October 2026 spanning $83,000 to $87,000.
Analysts at QCP Capital and CryptoQuant identified the $84,000 to $85,000 zone as the heaviest concentration of supply from long-term holders, with profit-taking from this group adding downward pressure on the price. Spot Bitcoin ETF inflows have been modest and inconsistent, failing to fully offset the selling pressure. The $85,000 level not only hosts a visible sell wall but also overlaps with the most significant long-term holder supply zone, making it a critical area to watch.
Analysts emphasize that a brief surge above $85,000 is insufficient; a sustained break is needed to confirm a rally with real momentum. Another resistance cluster around $87,000 has also been noted, though it carries about half the volume of the $85,000 wall. Key signals to monitor include whether the Binance sell wall rebuilds, long-term holder profit-taking trends, and ETF inflows, which have so far failed to provide bulls with a clear advantage.
