Bitcoin Beach Adoption Slows Amid Rainy Season and Bear Market

Jon Atack, a Bitcoin Core developer, recently visited El Zonte in El Salvador, where he experienced a disappointing reality of Bitcoin adoption. In an August 23, 2026 post on his X account, Atack shared that during his lunch at a café in Bitcoin Beach, the staff told him it was their first payment with bitcoin all month. They explained that they used to receive many payments in BTC, but now practically none come through.

Atack asked if most people paid in cash, as is common in rural areas where banking is scarce. However, he was informed that almost all beach customers pay by card, not cash. The developer then attempted to offer the staff a tip in sats, but struggled to remember how to use his app and didn't want to receive it.

Giacomo Zucco, a bitcoin developer and promoter, offered some context, stating that in-person commerce is challenging for Bitcoin adoption. However, he emphasized the importance of physical spaces where users can spend with less friction.
