Bitcoin Beach Loses Its Luster as Card Payments Replace Cryptocurrency
El Zonte in El Salvador has seen a significant drop in Bitcoin payments since it became known as Bitcoin Beach after El Salvador adopted Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021. A recent visit by developer Jon Atack found that his payment was the first in a month, with the vendor stating that almost all customers now pay by card rather than Bitcoin. This anecdotal evidence may not represent wider adoption, but it suggests that the area's reputation as a hub for Bitcoin payments is fading.
The vendor told Atack that he had been working at El Zonte for three years and had seen a shift away from Bitcoin payments in recent months. While another visitor reported that Bitcoin payments were still possible in the area, local experiences differ, and it remains to be seen whether this trend will continue. The price of Bitcoin was $79,841.15 at the time of reporting.
