Bitcoin Beach Restaurant Logs One BTC Payment Amid El Salvador's Volatility Struggles
A restaurant in El Zonte, also known as Bitcoin Beach, has seen only one bitcoin transaction in an entire month. According to Jon Atack, a Bitcoin Core contributor who lives in El Salvador, staff at the restaurant told him that his lunch bill was their only bitcoin payment over that period.
The decline in everyday BTC transactions is attributed to a prevalent HODL mindset among holders, who are reluctant to spend their bitcoin due to high price volatility. Analysts suggest that if a holder expects bitcoin to appreciate, using it for small purchases feels like a bad trade.
El Salvador's concession to the IMF loan agreement made merchant acceptance of bitcoin voluntary rather than mandatory, giving businesses an off-ramp back to card rails. With customer demand nearly zero, restaurants are finding the operational cost of accepting BTC hard to justify.
