Bitcoin Becomes Down Payment Option for US Homebuyers

Better Mortgage and Coinbase have collaborated to introduce a mortgage product that allows U.S. homebuyers to use Bitcoin as collateral for down payments.

The program requires borrowers to pledge $2.50 in Bitcoin for every $1 of down payment, with the total value reaching $360 million in pre-applications.

This new product involves two loans: a traditional home loan and a Bitcoin-backed down payment loan.

The Bitcoin collateral is held by Better Mortgage and can be rehypothecated, posing counterparty risk. It remains locked until the mortgage is fully paid or refinanced.
