Bitcoin Benefits from Debasement Trade Revival
The debasement trade is back in vogue on Wall Street, with investors looking for new ways to play it. This trend is bullish for traditional inflation-hedge assets like gold and potentially beneficial for newer contenders, such as Bitcoin. The price of Bitcoin has been highly correlated with gold's price, with a 74% correlation between the two.
The trigger for the debasement trade's revival was Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's announcement that the government would expand its purchases of long-dated bonds. This move artificially keeps bond yields lower and makes investors believe the risk of currency debasement is rising rather than falling. Bitcoin has risen 22% since the announcement, while gold has fallen 2%, suggesting it may not be seeing the same upside amid rising inflation expectations.
Bitcoin's scarcity makes it a potential hedge against dollar debasement, and its limited supply means that no government can print more of it. Institutional investors are taking a cautious approach to adopting new technologies and assets, but some are bundling tried-and-tested solutions with newer approaches like Bitcoin.
