Bitcoin Blasts Past $72,600 in Record-Breaking Short-Squeeze Rally
Bitcoin's price surged on Thursday, reaching $72,600 and marking one of its strongest single-day performances in months. The cryptocurrency climbed roughly 15% since the start of the week, fueled by a combination of political signals from Washington, shifting monetary conditions, and a forced unwind of bearish bets.
The rally was sparked by President Donald Trump's meeting with crypto industry executives, including the CEOs of Coinbase and Kraken, where he urged Congress to advance the CLARITY Act. This legislation would establish a formal regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency industry, giving the market a strong signal that Washington may be moving toward a more defined stance on digital assets.
Additionally, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced it would double the scale of its government bond buyback operations, injecting additional liquidity into financial markets and benefiting risk-sensitive assets like Bitcoin.
The speed of the rally was significantly amplified by forced short covering, with over $1.4 billion in short positions liquidated across the broader crypto market during the move. This added further buying pressure, pushing prices even higher.
