Bitcoin Blasts Past $85K Amid $635M Short Liquidation Frenzy
Bitcoin's price surged past $85,000 on September 21, 2026, reaching an intraday high of $85,299 on Binance. The climb was fueled by a combination of fresh buying and forced short closures.
Across the crypto derivatives market, $635 million in short positions were liquidated over the past 24 hours as prices climbed, per CoinGlass.
The influx of buyers betting on a decline being forced to buy back their positions added further upward pressure, triggering another wave of liquidations. This feedback loop helped accelerate the move to $85,000.
Market observers are focused on two groups: long-term holders and institutions. Long-term holders tend to distribute when prices surge into territory they last saw during a prior peak. Institutions, specifically those flowing capital through spot ETF products, can absorb long-term holder supply without prices cratering.
The concentration of short positions in the $83,000 to $86,000 range identified by Glassnode as an acceleration zone could remain important on either side of the market.
