Bitcoin Blasts Past $85K as Shorts Suffer Massive Liquidation
Bitcoin's price surged past $85,000 on September 21, reaching an all-time high of $85,248 before easing to $84,545. This significant increase in value was accompanied by a substantial liquidation of short positions, with CoinGlass tracking $648 million in short liquidations over the preceding 24 hours.
According to data from Glassnode, there were approximately 137,386 traders who were wiped out due to these liquidations, with Bitcoin accounting for around $360 million of this total. Ethereum was also heavily affected, with nearly $171 million in short positions being liquidated.
The largest single liquidation occurred on Binance, where an $11.29 million BTC-USDT position was closed. This sudden shift in market dynamics suggests that many traders had underestimated the strength of Bitcoin's rally, leading to a cascade of short-selling losses.
