Bitcoin Bounces Back After Trump's Tariff Threat
President Donald Trump's recent threat to impose 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles and steel imports has had a significant impact on the cryptocurrency market, particularly Bitcoin. The asset initially fell towards $78,200 before recovering above $79,300.
The tariff threat was announced in a Truth Social post, where Trump stated that 'Build in the U.S. and there are ZERO TARIFFS.' This move followed the collapse of negotiations between Washington and Ottawa on August 21, which aimed to reduce U.S. tariffs on Canadian cars and light trucks from 25% to 15%.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the dispute as a trade war after the talks failed, stating 'You're at war when you get attacked.' In response to existing 50% U.S. duties, Canada plans to impose retaliatory tariffs on selected American products from September 8.
