Bitcoin Breakout Boosts Fintech Stocks, But Not All Companies Profit Equally
The recent breakout of Bitcoin has driven up stocks in fintech companies, particularly those with significant exposure to cryptocurrency. SoFi Technologies and Robinhood Markets saw their stock prices rise by 5% and 13%, respectively, while Affirm Holdings' stock increased by 2%. The Global X FinTech ETF, which tracks the performance of various fintech companies, gained only 3%.
The reason for this disparity lies in the different levels of exposure to cryptocurrency among these companies. Robinhood Markets earns direct transaction revenue from crypto trading, making it highly sensitive to Bitcoin's price movements. SoFi Technologies also has a significant footprint in the crypto market through its stablecoin and crypto trading product, although its stock price is not as closely tied to Bitcoin's performance.
Affirm Holdings, on the other hand, has minimal exposure to cryptocurrency revenue, which explains why its stock price increase was relatively muted. Despite this, the company's stock is still up 1% year-to-date, a better performance than SoFi Technologies and Robinhood Markets, which are down 32% and 16%, respectively.
The Global X FinTech ETF's performance is also notable, as it carries significant weights in payments and software names, which diluted the reaction to Bitcoin's breakout. As a result, the ETF was only up 3% on Friday, leaving it well below its starting price for the year.
