Bitcoin Breakout Faces Durability Test Amid Thin Participation
Bitcoin's price surge above $77,000 marks a sharp reversal for August, but Bitfinex warns that this momentum may not be sustainable. The breakout, which pushed Bitcoin past $71,000 on August 20, was largely driven by an aggressive short squeeze rather than widespread participation.
About $3 billion in crypto shorts were liquidated across August 19 and 20, while futures open interest rose to roughly $51.36 billion. This indicates that fresh derivatives positioning entered the market even as shorts were forced out.
The rally was also boosted by US spot Bitcoin ETFs, which attracted around $1.92 billion during the week. However, Bitfinex notes that participation remains thin, with Bitcoin transfer volume near the bottom of its eight-year range.
