Bitcoin Breakout Sets Stage for $2.9 Trillion Crypto Market
Bitcoin's weekly close above its 50-week moving average for the first time in nearly a year sparked a broad crypto rally, pushing total market capitalization to $2.8 trillion.
The breakout was confirmed by Galaxy Research data showing BTC closed the week ending September 20 at $81,159, approximately 3% above the 50-week average near $78,786.
This technical breakthrough forced a wave of short covering, with roughly $240 million in short liquidations and additional buying pressure as traders covered losing positions.
Altcoins such as NEAR and ZETA benefited from ecosystem-specific catalysts, while Ethereum climbed 3.23% to $2,658, XRP gained 3.64% to $1.43, and Solana rose about 3.5% to $111.95.
Regulatory developments, including the SEC's framework for tokenized U.S. stocks and the CFTC/SEC digital commodities framework, provided clearer rules for institutional participation and supported institutional sentiment.
