Bitcoin Breaks Above $87,000 as Institutional Demand Fuels Rally
Bitcoin's price surged above $87,000 on September 22, bringing the psychologically significant $100,000 level back into focus for traders. This rally coincided with gains in technology stocks, indicating investors are becoming more willing to take on risk.
The move may have also been fueled by short covering, as traders betting against Bitcoin closed their positions. However, the sustainability of this rally will depend on continued demand and whether BTC can stay above its recent breakout levels.
US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) attracted $714 million in net inflows during this period, with BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust leading the way at $350 million. Fidelity's Bitcoin ETF followed with $257 million in inflows.
Cryptocurrency-specific demand remains strong, but the macroeconomic environment could pose a challenge for Bitcoin. Richmond Federal Reserve President Tom Barkin recently expressed concerns about inflation and left open the possibility of further interest-rate increases, which could lift Treasury yields and reduce demand for speculative assets like Bitcoin.
