Bitcoin Breaks Above Key 50-Week SMA
Bitcoin has finally reclaimed its 50-week simple moving average (SMA), a significant technical indicator that can signal the start of a more sustained bullish trend. After closing above $86,000 and gaining distance from its lows, the cryptocurrency's weekly chart shows it has closed above this key level for the first time in 45 weeks.
The 50-week SMA is considered one of the most important long-term trend indicators in Bitcoin due to its ability to distinguish between a bear market, recovery, and sustained bullish trend. Historically, when Bitcoin falls below the 50-week SMA, it tends to struggle to reclaim it, indicating a weakening longer-term trend.
According to Galaxy Research's analysis of historical data going back to 2011, in 11 out of 13 cases where Bitcoin crossed above its 50-week moving average on a weekly basis during bear markets, the cryptocurrency did not make a new cycle low. This suggests that reclaiming the 50-week SMA can be an important step towards transitioning out of a bear market.
