Bitcoin Breaks New Ground with First Mainnet ZK-Proof
Bitcoin's mainnet has witnessed a significant milestone with the successful verification of its first zero-knowledge (ZK) proof, courtesy of BitcoinOS (BOS). This breakthrough occurred at 11:22 pm UTC on July 24. The implications are substantial, as it could unlock new levels of functionality and scalability for Bitcoin without requiring changes to the blockchain's base layer.
BOS co-founder Edan Yago described this development as an era where Bitcoin is no longer just digital gold but also an operating system and a platform for decentralized applications. He went further by asserting that Ethereum, Solana, and other layer-1 projects are now vulnerable to competition from Bitcoin.
The tech behind this innovation is called BitSNARK, a ZK Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge verification software library. This technology enables developers to create 'near-trustless bridges' for moving Bitcoin between the mainnet and layer-2 rollups. Yago explained that a single Bitcoin transaction can now be used privately and for executing smart contracts, potentially representing thousands of transactions.
This upgrade transforms Bitcoin into an operating system capable of handling decentralized services and activities like DAOs and DeFi without requiring soft forks or consensus changes. According to Yago, it is now possible to introduce any kind of feature permissionlessly.
